Karangahake Update

Mining permit #51326 owner New Talisman Gold Mines now has all the regulatory permissions needed to start mining with the Karangahake Mountain. Coromandel Watchdog has been working with local community group Protect Karangahake to protect the mountain and the group has recently launched a case in the High Court to challenge the decision of the Hauraki District Council to grant the company a resource consent with no public consultation. The area within the permit, the Karangahake Gorge, is a valuable national recreational and conservation treasure, having won the International Green Flag award for the second year in a row in 2014 (one of only two places in Aotearoa New Zealand).
